Navajo Fry Bread

Navajo Fry Bread Recipe. A light and fluffy bread.

Ingredients


all-purpose flour 2 cups
baking powder 1 Tbsp
salt 1 tsp
corn oil 1 Tbsp
water 3/4 cup
For Frying
corn oil 2 cups
Topping
honey 1/2 cup to taste
powdered sugar 1/4 cup to taste


Directions

  1. In a food processor or mixer combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Slowly add the corn oil and water and continue mixing until it forms a rough dough.
  3. Place the dough on a floured surface and gently knead until the dough is elastic and comes together. Do not overwork the dough.
  4. Shape the dough into a ball. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour.
  5. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Flatten each piece and using a floured rolling pin roll into 7 inch thin discs. Using your finger poke a hole in the center of the dough. Repeat.
  6. In a large fry pan or deep fryer heat the corn oil to 360 degrees.
  7. One at a time carefully slip a piece of the flattened dough rounds into the hot oil and fry for 2 minutes. Turn the fry bread over once with a long handled spoon.
  8. Remove the fry bread from the oil and drain on paper towels. Repeat.
  9. Sprinkle the fry bread with powdered sugar and drizzle with honey as desired.
